The Mouthwash Guide

Posted .

Have you ever been caught in a rush and don’t have time to brush your teeth? Are you ever stuck with bad breath or plaque in your teeth at work? These are each common dilemmas and there is a common solution that works for both of them: mouthwash.

Buying mouthwash can assist you every day. Depending on the type of mouthwash, it can help with bad breath, plaque, and eliminating bacteria. There are two varieties of mouthwash which are called cosmetic and therapeutic. Cosmetic mouthwash is used to rinse out the mouth and provide good breath. It is not meant to kill bacteria but is often cheaper than therapeutic. Therapeutic mouthwash has active ingredients to eliminate bacteria and reduce conditions like gingivitis, plaque, and tooth decay. Included in the active ingredients of therapeutic mouthwash may be cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine, fluoride, essential oils, and peroxide. Cetylpyridinium will freshen your breath. Chlorhexidine and essential oils have been shown to help control plaque and gingivitis. Fluoride gives your teeth a coat of armor to prevent tooth decay.

Mouthwashes can also whiten your teeth, prevent oral cancer, induce xerostomia (reduction of saliva in the mucous membranes), and provide pain relief.
